PURPOSE The Ramp Duty Manager at Brisbane Airport is responsible for leading daily Ramp Services operations and ensuring safe, compliant and efficient service delivery. The role requires active oversight of staff performance and strict adherence to airline, airport and Oceania Ground Force Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), with prompt action to address and document non-compliance. The Ramp Duty Manager coordinates staff and equipment to meet operational requirements, ensures all staff take their required meal breaks in accordance with the Company’s Enterprise Agreement, and actively manages fatigue and working hours. The role sets clear expectations, addresses performance and conduct concerns, and maintains accurate operational records. Reporting directly to the Ground Services Manager and working collaboratively with Ground Operations Managers, the Ramp Duty Manager leads teams through routine operations and disruptions, including delays, cancellations and adverse weather. The role demands sound judgement, proactive problem-solving and clear communication, with safety before schedule guiding every operational decision. RESPONSIBILITIES - Manage compliance across Ramp Services, ensuring all staff consistently follow airline, airport and Oceania Ground Force SOPs. Identify and address non-compliance promptly, document corrective action and escalate concerns where required.
- Lead staff on shift, allocate duties and communicate clear expectations for safety, performance and service delivery.
- Monitor staff performance, provide timely feedback, document concerns and take appropriate corrective action or escalate matters to management.
- Support new staff through coaching, clear instructions and regular feedback, and coordinate training or retraining where required.
- Manage operational disruptions, including delays, cancellations, equipment issues and adverse weather, while prioritising safety and maintaining communication with relevant stakeholders.
- Allocate staff and equipment efficiently, ensuring staffing arrangements comply with the Company’s Enterprise Agreement and applicable requirements for fatigue management and working hours.
- Plan, allocate and actively monitor meal breaks to ensure all staff take their required breaks in accordance with the Company’s Enterprise Agreement. Arrange operational coverage, give clear instructions and confirm breaks are taken and accurately recorded. Address missed or delayed breaks promptly, document the circumstances and escalate any barriers to compliance.
- Manage leave requests and overtime within delegated authority, balancing operational requirements with safe staffing levels.
- Identify skill gaps and coordinate upskilling to maintain adequate competency coverage across shifts.
- Conduct regular toolbox meetings, reinforce safe work practices and encourage prompt reporting of hazards, incidents and near misses.
- Read and apply aircraft loading instructions, weight and balance information, dangerous goods labels, loading manifests and baggage routing information.
- Ensure staff understand and acknowledge relevant Company communications, procedural changes and “Read and Sign” documents.
- Monitor ground service equipment condition, ensure defects are reported and prevent unsafe or unserviceable equipment from being used.
- Support airline and Company audits, maintain accurate records and follow up corrective actions within delegated responsibility.
- Maintain effective working relationships with airline representatives, airport authorities and other operational stakeholders, addressing issues professionally and escalating matters when required.
- Monitor service quality and lead improvements to operational efficiency, safety, compliance and customer outcomes.
- Assist with recruitment, candidate assessment and onboarding.
- Undertake other reasonable duties as directed by management.
ESSENTIAL SELECTION CRITERIA To be considered for interview, applicants must demonstrate all of the following: - At least five years’ experience working in an airport ramp environment, including at least two years leading and managing staff in airport ground handling, of which a minimum of 12 months must involve supervising ramp operations. Experience must include independently coordinating aircraft turnarounds, directing teams, allocating work, setting expectations, addressing performance or conduct concerns, and documenting and escalating matters appropriately. Applicants must provide examples of their own responsibilities, actions and outcomes.
- A strong, demonstrated safety and compliance record, including consistent application of airline, airport and employer procedures; identifying hazards; reporting incidents and equipment defects; and taking action when work is unsafe.
- Sound operational judgement under pressure, supported by examples of decisions made during delays, cancellations, staffing shortages or other disruptions.
- Strong organisational and multitasking skills, with the ability to manage staffing, equipment, turnaround requirements, meal breaks and fatigue while maintaining safety and service standards.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, including accurate handovers, operational reports and records, and the ability to give direct, professional feedback to staff.
- The ability to work constructively with airline representatives, airport stakeholders, managers and team members, including resolving conflict and maintaining a strong focus on customer requirements, service quality and operational standards.
- A demonstrated record of reliability, accountability and professional conduct appropriate to a role that supervises staff and represents the Company.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and Outlook, and the ability to confidently use operational systems to maintain records, communicate information and support daily operations.
- Demonstrated ability to lead initiatives that improve operational efficiency, safety, compliance or service quality.
HIGHLY REGARDED - Experience coaching, training or assessing ramp staff.
- Experience supporting airline or ground handling audits and investigations.
WORKING ARRANGEMENTS This is a salaried position based at Brisbane Airport. Applicants must be available to work a rotating roster across all seven days, including early starts, late finishes, weekends and public holidays. Reasonable additional hours may be required during operational disruptions. The salary and employment terms will be provided before an offer is accepted.
